A Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist (CAAB) has an advanced scientific degree in behavior, with a focus on animal behavior. CAABs use their behavioral expertise to address problem behaviors in animals and increase more desirable behaviors.

CAABs may work with a variety of animal species and often work directly with other professionals, including veterinarians, to identify and contextualize the target behavior, try and determine the cause(s) of the behavior, and then develop an intervention protocol to modify that behavior to acceptable levels. Our knowledge of scientific principles helps maximize the accuracy of behavioral analysis and intervention efficacy, and our experience allows us to develop novel approaches to solutions.

All CAABs either have an MS or PhD in a behavioral science or a DVM/VMD with a behavioral residency. They also have significant experience with animal behavior, and most have published peer-reviewed research articles or books. The Animal Behavior Society maintains a list of criteria for certification.
